Man of bulldozer
Klocki - Some time ago there was a poll on the Lego Technic website that asked whether or not would we like to see more electric components in the Technic sets. I believe most of the people said yes, so I’m curious what other components of the new electric system are we going to see in the near future? There was a new sound brick (55206c02) in the 4958 Monster Dino set, and there is some kind of PF micromotor used as a winch in the 4995 Freight Helicopters set. Is there something more coming? Some kind of lights perhaps?
Markus - I can’t tell what exactly will come in the future, but we are working on some nice stuff, so look forward to that.
- I’d like to ask you about the IR remote controller. The one we find in 8275 set is perfect for treaded vehicles, but it gets tricky when you try to steer a regular car with it. Can we hope for some other versions of the controller that would be more suitable for cars? And what about the new Train series, driven with PF motors? Is it going to use the same controller the 8275 does?
- As I said before, we are still working on the PF system and upgrade it every year.
- Another thing to congratulate you on was the “Behind the Design” movie published on the Lego Technic website. It was a great idea, many people have learnt a lot about your job thanks to this movie. One thing I want to ask you about - we’ve seen some footage of the 8275 being tested by some perhaps 10 years old kids. I wonder how would Buldozer look like if it was designed for adults, not as a kid’s toy? What would you design differently?
- Thanks, it was a lot of fun to do the movie. So we know that a lot of adults buy our models, kids are a still our main costumers, so i have not really thought of how a adult version would look like, maybe it will be more expensive with more remote control functions…. just guessing.
- Since I’ve already mentioned the Lego Technic polls - what influence they have on your job as a designer? E.g. I remember another poll from several months ago that asked what machines would we like to see as sets in given price scopes. There were many options to choose from, including some 5-axle mobile crane, and I’m curious how important are the votes from such poll to your designing process?
- We take them very serious, because we build models our costumes want to buy, and not what we think they should have.
- It is common thinking that Technic is a boy’s toy. Do you have some female designers in the design team or is it boys-only territory?
- Yes, it is a boys territory here, though all our building instructions are done by women.
