Zagreb, Cracow and 35 thousands bricks
Each time I pass by the Slowacki Theatre, I wonder: how many tan bricks should one have to build a model of it? Recently, when Nexus visited Krakow, theatre was on our route from train station to the market square and we were discussing it again.
But the true is, there is a guy who not only has enough bricks, but also have already finished a similar model. Matija Puzar, Croatian AFOL and a scientist from Oslo University built a replica of National Theatre in Zagreb. It looks just like the Cracow one, isn’t it?
The whole similarity thing is quite interesting. Both theatres were build almost at the same moment. Krakow’s was opened in 1893, Zagreb’s only two years later. Croatian is a creation of duo of Vienna architects: Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, our one was build by Jan Zawiejski . What is more interesting, both Vienna gentelmen tried to win a design contest for Cracow theatre, unfortunately without success. I wonder if the similarity is because these days all new Austro-Hungarian theatres was build the same way or is there somenting more? Take a look at the photos: left is Zagreb, right - Cracow.
OK, back to the bricks. How many? More than 35 thousands! It’s funny that Matija built his model for 12 months, just a four months shorter than the real thing was built. And who says bricks are for kids?
